TL 82 SW COGGESHALL

5/5 Hovell's Farmhouse

House. Late C18. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain
tiles. Square plan facing approximately N, with 2 internal stacks symmetrically
arranged, and lower service range to rear with internal stack, and C20 extension
beyond, roofed with corrugated asbestos. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 3 late
C18/early C19 sashes of 12 lights, with crown glass. First floor, 4 late
C18/early C19 sashes of 3+6 lights. Off-centre 6-panel door, the upper 4 panels
fielded and moulded, the lower panels flush, in wooden doorcase with attached
Tuscan columns, fanlight with radial tracery and open pediment. The E elevation
has on the ground floor 2 early C19 sashes of 16 lights and one C20 casement,
and on the first floor 2 C19 casements. Linked parallel roofs, fully hipped. A
map of 1731 shows a different house on the site, with a ridge stack near the
left end, an external stack at the right end, and 4 gables (Essex Record Office
D/DU 19/2).
