GV II

House, now shop and 2 houses. Late C14, altered in early C16, C17, C19 and C20.
Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. Main range
facing S, with internal stack at right end. original 3-bay crosswing to left,
with early C19 external stack to left of it, and C16 axial stack and one-bay
extension to rear. C17 stair tower to rear of right end, C17 rear wing to left
of it with axial stack, and pantiled single-storey extension beyond. 2-storey
lean-to extension with slate roof to right of this wing, in line with stair
tower. 2-storey lean-to extension with slate roof to right of crosswing, and
single-storey lean-to extension roofed with modern interlocking tiles to rear
and to right of it. 2 storeys. The front elevation is early C19, comprising 3
shops of the period and a separate doorway; 2 of the shops (nos. 13 and 15) have
been converted to residential use. No. 11 (Goodies) has 2 altered shop windows
of 3 transomed lights, a central early C19 half-glazed door with blocked
overlight, and a simple moulded fascia. To right of it is an early C19 half-
glazed door in a recessed porch with panelled jambs and soffit, heavily reeded
architrave with paterae, and repaired flat canopy. No. 13 has an altered shop
window of 3 transomed lights, and an early C19 half-glazed door and overlight
with serpentine tracery. No. 15 (Saddledon) has 2 altered shop windows of 3 and
2 vertical lights, and a central C20 half-glazed door with early C19 overlight
and serpentine tracery. A continuous moulded fascia spans these 2 shops. First
floor, 3 early C19 sashes of 16 lights. Hipped roof, rebuilt. In left return,
one C19 horizontal sash of 24+9 lights. One in-pitch rooflight over no. 11, and
another in left hip. No. 11 has a cut-back jetty, chamfered binding beams with
step stops, and plain joists of horizontal section jointed to them with central
tenons. Much of the internal studding has been removed, leaving evidence of a
former through-passage at the right, and a transverse partition to left of it.
3 diamond mortices of unglazed window to left of middle bay, converted to a
glazed window with 2 moulded mullions, and later blocked. A post at the right
side has an original splayed and undersquinted scarf. Cambered tiebeam with
mortices for arched braces and crownpost, missing. Roof rebuilt in C20. The
rear extension has re-used plain joists of horizontal section, one of which has
the matrix of a C13 notched lap joint, and a late C19 cast iron grate on the
upper floor. In the former hall is an early C16 inserted floor comprising
moulded joists, and moulded beams and clamps with spiral-leaf carving. Interior
of no. 13 not inspected. In no. 15 most of the timber structure is concealed by
interior finishes, revealing only trenched bracing and studding in the upper
right wall, and studding on the upper part of the stair tower. A face-halved
and bladed scarf in the front wallplate implies that the walls of the hall have
been raised in the C17 to align with the crosswings. No. 15 has an early C19
straight stair with turned newels and stick balusters, and on the first floor a
pine 2-panel door. RCHM 65.
