House. Mid-C16 and C17, altered in C18/19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed
with handmade red plain tiles. 3-bay range facing N, with large internal stack
at right end, and small C18/19 external stack at left end. C17 2-bay wing to
rear of left and middle bays, with C19 stack to right. In rear right angle 2
catslide extensions to the main range and the rear wing respectively meet at a
valley. 2 storeys. 3 C20 casements on ground floor, 2 on first floor.
Ashlared plaster at front. C20 door in left side of left wing. Between the 2
right bays of the main range is an open truss with cambered tie beam, chamfered
with step stops, braces to it missing. Large wood-burning hearth reduced for an
early C19 fireplace with cupboards to each side. Chamfered axial beam with step
stops; plain joists of horizontal section in front of it, replaced thinner
joists to rear. The rear wall has exposed studding with curved braces trenched
to the outside, enclosed by rear lean-to; 2 grooves in wallplate for sliding
shutters of blocked unglazed windows. Edge-halved and bridled scarfs in both
wallplates. The left bay is more altered; intermediate studs on ground floor
removed, C18 chamfered transverse beam with long lamb's tongue stops and plain
joists of narrow section; C20 brick hearth. The rear wing has a chamfered axial
beam with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section, unjowled posts,
and a clasped purlin roof. The right pitch of this roof has been raised in the
C19 to a shallower angle. Formerly The Star Inn, and in 1731 The Swan and Star
