Wrongly shown on OS map as Grange Farm. House. Circa 1600, altered in C18 and
C19. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. Main
range facing NNW with 2 axial stacks. 2-bay rear wing at left end, and 2-bay
rear wing near right end, with external stack to right. Between the wings,
stair tower, and single-storey lean-to extension with slate roof. 3 storeys.
Ground floor, one C18/early C19 sash of 12 lights and 2 early C19 tripartite
sashes of 2-12-2 lights. First floor, 2 similar sashes and 2 early C19
tripartite sashes of 4-12-4 lights. Second floor, 3 early C19 sashes of 16
lights. Off- centre fielded and moulded 8-panel door with oval lights in the
top panels, in doorcase with fluted pilasters, and an introduced plaster bust in
the place of each capital; moulded flat canopy. The main range and the left
rear wing have hipped roofs. Single-storey splayed bay of full-height sashes of
4+4 lights on left return, late C19. The stair tower has a gabled dormer to the
right, window blocked. Access to interior refused at time of survey, July 1987,
but internal features described in RCHM (Little Coggeshall) 5 are reported to be
present. Shown on estate map of 1639 (Essex Record Office, D/DOp, P.1).
