TL 82 SW COGGESHALL STOCK STREET
5/176 Nos. 73 and 74
House, now 2 cottages. C16 and early C17, altered in C19 and C20. Timber
framed, plastered and weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red plain tiles.
C16 main range of 2 bays facing approximately S, with C20 stack at left end and
C20 single-storey extension beyond. Early C17 2-bay crosswing to right, with
contemporary stack at the junction, and C19 catslide extension to right with
stack at rear corner. No. 73 comprises the main range and left extension, no.
74 comprises the crosswing and right extension. 2 storeys. 5 C20 casements on
ground floor, 4 on first floor. 2 C20 doors with C19 gabled canopies. Roof of
crosswing half-hipped at front. C20 casements to rear. Rear weatherboarded,
front and sides plastered. The main range has jowled posts, a binding beam
supported on a hewn ledge of ogee profile, plain joists of horizontal section
arranged longitudinally, one of 2 chamfered braces to a cambered tiebeam, and a
C20 grate in a C19 wood-burning hearth. The crosswing has jowled posts, curved
braces trenched inside the studding, a chamfered binding beam with lamb's tongue
stops, chamfered bridging beams without stops, and plain joists of vertical
section. Large wood-burning hearth reduced for C20 grate. RCHM 93.
