House. C14/15, altered in C17, C19 and C20. Timber framed, plastered with some
weatherboarding, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 3-bay range, gable end
to street, with internal stack at right side of middle bay. C19 extension to
rear left, the right wall of red brick on the lower storey, weatherboarded
above. 2 storeys with attics. The ground floor and first floor each have one
sash of 10+10 lights; one early C19 sash of 16 lights in attic gable. C20
glazed door within recessed porch. Small C18 2-light casement in right return.
The first internal binding beam from the front is deeply chamfered with step
stops, with a solid knee 0.13 metre wide at the left end. To right of it are
mortices for a similar knee and post, and mortices and wattle groove for a
former studded partition, indicating that originally there was a through-passage
to the left and a small enclosed area to the front right, probably a shop. A
C20 grate is installed in the front of a large stack, probably C16/17. The
second beam is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, a late C16/early C17
introduction, probably the inserted floor of an open hall. Plain joists of
horizontal section are exposed in part of the rear bay, the others plastered to
the soffits. Thin joists of vertical section in rear extension. Early C19
winder stair with moulded handrail, turned balusters and altered newels.
Chamfered internal tiebeam with step stops, with mortices for missing
arch-braces to it. Inserted attic floor with plain joists of vertical section,
and early hardwood floorboards. RCHM 56.
