Crosswing of former hall house, now a house. C15, altered in early C19 and C20.
Timber framed, with exposed framing at front, plastered elsewhere, roofed with
handmade red plain tiles. 3-bay range with gable end to road, originally the
crosswing of a hall house to the right, the remainder replaced c.1600 by the
present no. 106 (item 9/216, q.v.). Early C19 axial stack at junction of middle
and rear bays. C20 single-storey extension with flat roof to rear. 2 storeys.
One early C19 sash of 16 lights on each floor. C20 door in right return, with
access through passage-way. Underbuilt jetty at front, the original lower wall
moved forwards to align with the upper wall, with the ends of joists of
horizontal section exposed externally. C20 ornamental paired curved tension
braces at each storey, in trenches for original braces. Bowtell in great
casement moulding on front tiebeam. Front roof rebuilt to align with street and
continuous range to right. Chamfered binding beams, unstopped, on ledged and
jowled posts; joists plastered to the soffits. Small wood-burning hearth in
front lower room. Edge-halved and bridled scarf in left wallplate. Grooves for
sliding shutters in both wallplates, near rear corner in right plate to clear
hall range; blocked unglazed windows. Original rebated oak floorboards in front
bay. Crownpost roof, much altered. The front bays of the roof have been wholly
rebuilt on the opposite alignment in the C19, and at the rear an original gablet
hip has been extended to form a gable. The original rafter couples and collars
survive between these alterations, with a stump of the collar-purlin in the
gablet. The tiebeam between the middle and rear bays has been moved forwards to
clear the inserted stack. Part of RCHM 90.
