Wrongly shown on OS map as Baines Farm. House, now 2 cottages. C17, altered in
C19 and C20. Timber framed, roughcast rendered, roofed with handmade red plain
tiles. 5 bays facing NE with 2 axial stacks, and wing to rear of right end,
with end stack. C20 flat-roofed single-storey extension to rear of main range,
and C20 slate-roofed single-storey extension to rear of rear wing. No. 1
comprises the part to the right of the right axial stack, no. 2 comprises the
remainder. 2 storeys and unlit attic. 4-window range of C20 metal casements,
C20 half-glazed door wth bracketed lean-to canopy (no. 2). The C20 door to no.
1 is in the right return. Chamfered transverse and axial beams, with lamb's
tongue stops and unstopped. Plain joists of vertical section jointed to them
with soffit tenons and diminished haunches. The left axial stack is large and
may be original, but it has C20 grates and is fully plastered. C20 grates
elsewhere. Both storeys are high. Jointed and pegged main frame, many internal
studs removed. Face-halved and bladed scarfs in wallplates. The division into
2 cottages is not at a bay division, and suggests that in the C19 this house was
divided into 3 cottages, of which 2 were later combined to form no. 2. Frame
much concealed by interior finishes. Roof ceiled. RCHM 5.
