Range of 4 attached cottages, now one house. C18/early C19, altered in later
C19 and 1981. Timber framed, facade of red brick in Flemish bond, remainder
plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. Single-span range facing NE
with 2 internal stacks in front of axis. Full length lean-to extension to rear,
and porch extension at right end, 1981. One storey with attics. 4 C20
casements, each with a plastered recess in the brick facade above, with a
2-centred head. 4 similar casements, each in a blocked doorway bricked up to
the sill, with similar recess above. 2 C20 casements in gabled dormers. C20
door in porch at right. The original rear wall is of plastered brick to a
height of approximately 1 metre, with 2 door apertures in the right half, left
half missing. Light studding, primary straight bracing, nailed construction.
End tiebeams halved or tenoned to wallplates, internal tiebeams lap-dovetailed
but all severed for doorways. Light joists of plain vertical section; some
timber re-used. 4 hearths, of which all have been altered in 1981. Originally
all had segmental arches on iron strips; in 2 the arch has been replaced by an
inserted mantel beam, in one the arch remains with an inserted mantel beam
below; in one the arch remains intact, but the side of the hearth has been cut
back and rebuilt. Shown in a map of 1823 (Essex Record Office, Q/Hi 4/39).
