Pair of attached houses. 1859, in Tudor Revival style. Red brick in Flemish
bond, some plastered timber framing with exposed imitation framing, roofed with
handmade plain and ornamental red clay tiles. Irregular cruciform plan, facing
E (entrance to no. 24 facing S). C20 flat-roofed single-storey extension to
rear right of no. 23. 2 storeys. No. 23, ground floor, one square oriel of
1-3-1 casements, with moulded mullions and surround and hipped roof of
ornamental tiles; first floor, one 3-light casement with moulded mullions,
moulded and chamfered surround. Plain door in moulded doorway with 4-centred
head, embossed foliage in the spandrels, moulded and chamfered surround. Carved
datestone in gable, with inscription 'O.S.O. 1859' for Onley Savill Onley (né
Harvey). Original carved and pierced bargeboards of fleur-de-lis design, partly
covered by C20 plain bargeboards. Right return, ground floor, 3 similar 2-light
casements (including one re-used in the C20 extension), one more on first floor.
All these windows at front and side are original, with cast iron lattices.
Original bargeboards similar to those at front, not covered. No. 24 comprises a
wing extending to the left, the first floor projecting one bay beyond the ground
floor, supported on 6 moulded posts, jettied to front, left and rear, a parallel
wing to the rear, and a service range beyond. On each floor, one 3-light
casement similar to the first-floor window of no. 23. The jetty has exposed
joists of horizontal section and a carved fascia; above it, imitation close
studding and curved tension bracing, roughcast between. Feature gable with
original carved and pierced bargeboards, and carved finial and pendant. In base
of stack, carved stone tablet with Onley arms, recessed in chamfered surround.
6 elaborately decorated shafts in Tudor style, octagonal and round. 4-centred
arch below projecting first floor, with embossed foliage, carved pendant and
moulded surround. In left return, 3 similar arches, dragon beams at each
corner, and one similar arch to rear. In recessed ground floor, 2 one-light
casements with cast iron lattices and chamfered surrounds, and door and doorway
similar to those of no. 23. First floor, one oriel similar to that of no. 23;
original carved and pierced bargeboards, carved finial and pendant. Joists,
bressumer and imitation framing as at front, continuing round rear elevation of
this wing. In next range, one similar one-light casement under small gable with
similar detail. Other original latticed and chamfered casements on rear
elevation and service range. The roofs have horizontal bands of alternate plain
and ornamental tiles, except the right wing of no. 23, which is mainly of
ornamental tiles. This pair of houses has retained almost all the original
architectural features.
