House, now institute and cottage. C18, altered c.1860 in Gothic Revival style.
Timber framed, roughcast rendered, roofed with handmade plain and ornamental red
clay tiles. Main range facing NW, with large external stack to rear, left of
middle, partly enclosed by catslide extension to left rear, roofed with slate.
C19 external stack at left end. Single-storey wing to rear of right end. 2
storeys and attics. 4-window range of C19 casements of 3,3,3 and one lights
respectively, with cast iron lattices. 3 similar casements of 3 lights in
gabled dormers with fretted bargeboards. 2 plain boarded doors, each with a C19
gabled canopy on scrolled brackets, roofed with ornamental tiles and crested
ridge-tiles. Gambrel roof patterned with ornamental tiles in diamond designs.
The rear stack is truncated at eaves level. The ground floor of the main range
is divided into 2 large rooms used for public and library purposes; the rear
extensions and the upper floors comprise a dwelling, no. 17. In both ground
floor rooms the transverse beams are boxed; joggled longitudinal beams are
partly boxed, partly chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. Each has a C19
freestanding post, chamfered with plain stops, supporting the transverse beam.
2 late C19 stairs from ground to first floor, the right stair altered. Late C18
dogleg stair from first floor to attic with turned newels, stick balusters and
moulded handrail (missing on the first flight). Above the first floor,
chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops. The rear stack is of C16 bricks with
lime mortar; to the rear of it an C18/19 hearth and additional shaft for
sweeping the chimney; to front of it, a C20 grate.
