House. C16 or earlier, extended in early C19. Timber framed and plastered with
roof of handmade red plain tiles, extended in gault brick in Flemish bond with
roof of slate. Original range of 3 bays aligned NE-SW with 2 axial stacks.
Early C19 range to SW, facing SW, and forming an L-plan, with 2 internal stacks.
C19 and C20 extensions in E angle. 2 storeys. C19 single-storey extension of
red brick with slate roof to NE of original range, with single-pitch roof. The
SW elevation has a 3-window range of early C19 sashes of 16 lights, in shallow
segmental arches of gauged brick, with crown glass. Central paired 3-panel
doors with fielded panels, Tuscan columns set back within the jambs, segmental
fanlight with radial tracery in arch of gauged brick. 4 stone steps.
Symmetrical front. Hipped roof of shallow pitch with overhanging eaves. The NH
elevation of the original building, facing the road, has one C18 sash of 16
lights on the ground floor, and 2 on the first floor, and a C20 door; the roof
is half-hipped to the right. To right of it, the side elevation of the early
C19 range has on the ground floor one sash similar to those in the front
elevation, on the first floor 2 blocked or dummy window apertures; flush 6-panel
door with simple canopy on slender columns. The original block has heavy plain
joists of horizontal section in the SW bay, and between the middle and NE bays a
heavy studded partition, exposed on the ground floor. The NE bay has a
chamfered axial beam with step stops, the joists plastered to the soffits and
supported on pegged clamps. Both internal tiebeams have been severed for
inserted doorways, and the walls have been raised in the C18. With the
exceptions noted the framing is concealed by plaster, but is probably intact.
The early C19 block has a full-length rear passage with original door and
fanlight at the SE end, central entrance/stair hall, original stair with stick
balusters and wreathed moulded handrail with unusual spiral termination; one
room to each side, each with a rear fireplace. An early C20 bow window has been
inserted in the flank wall of the lower right room.
