GV II

Service and stable range, now a house. Mid-C18, converted in C20. Red brick in
Flemish bond, roofed with red clay pantiles. Main range of 7 bays facing SE, 2
storeys, with rear wing of one storey with attics at left end. External stack
and lean-to extension at right end. Ground floor, 6 C18 sashes of 12 lights
with flat arches of gauged brick, set back in recesses with semi-circular arches
of gauged brick. First floor, 6 C18 casements with similar heads, and central
casement with glazing bars forming an octagonal pattern. Crown glass. Central
C20 door and doorway with rusticated jambs and semi-circular arch, set back
within original arch of gauged brick. Plain band. Dentilled eaves cornice and
pediment of gault brick. Hipped roof. Central octagonal wooden cupola with
clock and copper dome, and octagonal bell-turret above with scrolled wooden legs
and lead dome. Dentilled eaves cornice on rear elevation and rear wing also.
The tithe map of 1841 shows a carriage drive to the central entrance, and 2 rear
wings forming an irregular half-H plan (Essex Record Office, D/CT 196). (B.L.
