KELVEDON HOLLOW ROAD
TL 81 NE and TL 8418-8518 (north side)
6/238 and 9/238 Park Farmhouse
House. Early C16 or earlier, altered in early C17, C18 and C20. Timber framed,
plastered, roofed with machine-made red plain tiles. Early C17 main range of 2
bays facing SE with axial stack at left end, and early C16 (or earlier)
crosswings of 2 bays at each end. C19 external stack to right, with C20
single-storey extension beyond. C18/19 single-storey service wing to rear of
main range, with internal stack at end, and lean-to in left rear angle. 2
storeys with attics. 3-window range of C20 diamond-leaded casements. C20
6-panel door and doorcase. The roof of the main range is substantially higher
than those of the crosswings, and covers their inner pitches. Concertina stack.
The left crosswing has an underbuilt jetty, a transverse beam with double ogee
mouldings, and joists with similar mouldings in the front bay, the joists in the
rear bay replaced. Mitres in the right girt, over a large wood-burning hearth,
suggest the former presence of a timber framed chimney in the same position.
The right crosswing has plain joists of horizontal section in the rear bay, all
but 3 replaced or altered in the front bay. Studs in its left wall have been
removed to incorporate it with the main range. Large wood-burning hearth facing
right in main range, which has been much altered to form a stair hall. Jowled
posts. Roofs not inspected but apparently altered. The rear wing has a
chamfered transverse beam, and an internal well in good order. RCHM 48.
