II

Cottage, mainly C17 of several builds with C20 rear extension and other C20
alterations. Originally timber framed and plastered but part brick clad late
C18. Red plain tiled roof of 2 levels. One storey to left and 1 storey and
attic with catslide dormer window to right. 4 window range of 2 light, C20
casements. There is an original C17 window. Two red brick chimney stacks.

INTERIOR:
Principal timbers of C17 building remain, including wall posts, floor frame, widely chamfered bridging beams, wall plate and principal rafters. Two room plan-form with winding stair and partly rebuilt inglenook fireplace.

HISTORY:
This cottage was left by Robert Bourne of Blake Hall in his will, proved 14th
December, 1666, the rent of which to provide clothing for the poor and needy of
the Parish at Christmas forever. During late C18 it was used as the Parish Poor
House. A tablet was erected in Bobbingworth Church 29th March 1832 recording
Bournes Charity. It is still on the west wall of the church.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE:
Fays Cottage is a C17 timber framed cottage with C18 and C20 alterations and extensions. All buildings of pre-1700 date which contain a significant proportion of their original fabric are likely candidates for designation. For vernacular buildings, retention of the original plan-form, construction and fabric are additional factors for consideration. Fays cottage retains a significant proportion of C17 timber framing and a legible plan form.
