House, c.1400 middle C15 and early C16. Timber framed and plastered with
gabled peg tile roofs. H plan house with jettied crosswings at east and west
ends and timber frame exposed on first floor of front. Very large rear wall
stack of early C16 rebuilt top half with small square flue. East crosswing
has C17 stack against flank with 2 tall diagonal shafts. C20 stack against
flank of west crosswing. Windows are mixture of timber casements C20 on front
with leaded lights and C20 bay window with peg tile lean-to roof under east
wing jetty. Old rear arched door head exposed on back. East crosswing is
earliest build probably c.1400.with soffit tenons, steeply cambered tiebeam
with traces of C17 painting and cross quadrant crownpost. The rear was half-
hipped with gablet but has been altered and extended. Service west cross-
wing of middle C15 has central tenons with soffit shoulders to floor joists
and simple crownpostroof with bracing down to flanking studs. The 2 storey
main block of early C16 has four way braced central crownpost, with brace-
supporting step at half height. Muntin and panel screens partition in-situ,
arch braces to tiebeam and soffit tenon with diminished haunch floor joists.
Bridging joist has late C16 moulded corbel block. Some old doors included C17
8- panel examples. C17 staircase tower on rear with fragments of contemporary
handrail. Remains of probable moat. (RCHM 10).
