1/51 Woolston Hall


House of late C16 origin, substantially altered in C18, now a club. Timber
framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. Aligned approx. NE-SW,
main elevation to SE, with external chimney stack on NE end and chimney stack to
rear of SW end. Large extensions to rear of SW end enclosing the latter stack.
2 storeys with attics. SE elevation, central 6-panel door in fluted and
dentilled doorcase. 6 double-hung sash windows of 12 lights on ground floor, 7
on first floor, heavy dentilled cornice, 5 hipped dormers with double-hung sash
windows of 9 lights, 2 rainwater heads bearing crests. SW elevation has double
doors with 6 fielded panels, fanlight with C20 leaded glass, porch with paired
Doric columns and pilasters, frieze, cornice and wrought iron railings over. 2
tripartite sash windows of 4-12-4 lights, C19. First floor, central french
window opening on to roof of porch, 2 tripartite windows. Attic, 2 dormers of
irregular shape with double-hung sash windows of 9 lights. Heavy dentilled
cornice. The diagonal chimney shafts reported in the 1952 schedule are not
present in 1983. Interior almost entirely concealed by modern decor, except one
ceiling of first floor room with moulded guilloche and egg-and-dart border. In
roof, arched wind bracing to clasped purlins. RCHM 5.
