Barn, early C17. Timber framed, weatherboarded, roofed with corrugated iron.
4 bays aligned approx. E-W, with entrances on both sides in the second by from
the W, no midstrey. The N entrance was of full height originally, with extra
posts for the large doors. The S entrance was lower originally, now enlarged
to wallplate level. Base walls of red brick, English bond, varying in height
from 30cm to 1 metre according to the slope of the ground. Jowled posts, heavy
studding of full height, straight raking braces from the posts to the sills
inside the studs, not trenched. Arched braces to cambered tiebeams, vertical
queen struts to collars clasping the lower of 2 sets of side purlins. Inclined
queen posts from these to upper purlins. Both have curved wind bracing. One
edge-halved and bridled scarf in each wallplate. At the E and the studs have
been removed for access to an adjoining C20 workshop.
