4/48 Chigwell Manor House
(Convent of the
Sacred Heart)

Manor house, C18, much altered externally. Interior features of architectural
interest: (1) staircase hall. Stair ascends in 2 long and 2 short flights,
3 twist-turned balusters to each tread, carved scrolled tread ends, carved
pendants. Panelled dado has fielded panels, fluted pilasters, Corinthian
capitals, later panelling above. Stair rail varnished, all the rest brush-
grained. (2) Ground floor room to SW of staircase hall. 2 6-panel doors with
segmental pediments over, with carvings of shell, acanthus and flowers. Each
has a painted crest with the legend 'Industria et labore' in carved cartouche.
Door panels painted in imitation of inlay. One doorcase is cut at the right
side to fit its present position, indicating that it has been moved from
elsewhere in the house. Ceiling with plaster surround of eg-and-dart and
running foliage, richly gilt and painted.
