TQ 49 SE CHIGWELL MANOR ROAD

House, c.1800. Stock brick, roofed partly with slates, partly with handmade
red clay tiles. Square plan with original entrance elevation (now the garden
elevation) to the SE, with canted bays on each return. Internal chimney stack
forming lobby-entrance, now blocked. Service wing to NW, with slate roof on
NE side, catslide roof of red tiles on SW side, end chimney stack, and single
storey lean-to extension beyond, roofed with red clay pantiles. Present
entrance is on the NE elevation. 3 storeys (service wing of one storey with
attics). SE elevation, double doors of 3 panels each, cast iron fanlight with
radiating tracery, plain doorcase, shallow hood. Double-hung sash windows of
12 lights with flat brick arches, 2 on ground floor, 3'on first floor.
Plastered band at first floor level. Second floor, 3 double-hung sash windows
of 6 lights with flat brick arches. Plastered band, parapet with stone coping,
hipped slated roof. The bays at each side are of 2 storeys, with double-hung
sash windows of 12 lights with flat brick arches in each cant and blind recesses
in front. The SE elevation forms a symmetrical composition. NE elevation, 4-
panel door, cast iron fanlight with radiating tracery in round brick arch, porch
with 2 Ionic columns and pilasters, dentilled cornice, 4 stone steps with plain
wrought iron handrail each side, NW side of porch glazed in C20. Bay as
described to SE, to NW tripartite double-hung sash windows of 4-12-4 lights on
ground and first floors. Above the door a double-hung sash window of 12 lights.
Second floor, 3 double-hung sash windows of 6 lights, parapet. The service
wing presents a brick wall of darker colour, with one plain boarded door and 2
double-hung sash windows of 12 lights. Plain stair from NE entrance. Service
wing is timber framed, C18/19, with primary straight bracing, beams plain-
chamfered with simple concave stops. Cellar. The house is illustrated from the
S as 'The Villa of John Elsee, Esq., at Chigwell Row', dated 22 September 1810,
in Dr. Hughson's 'Description of London and its Environs', drawn by Schnebbelie
and engraved by Davenport. It is shown then as now, but with a pedimented Ionic
porch on the SE elevation. This may be the porch which is now on the hiE
elevation, but the pediment is missing.
