6/1 Butchers Farmhouse
House, C18, extended in C19. Red brick, Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red
clay tiles. Aligned approx. E-W, aspect S, with internal chimney stack in each
gable. Single-storey bakehouse/brewhouse with end chimney to rear of E end,
C19. Single-storey lean-to extension to rear of remainder, C19. 2 storeys with
attics and cellar. Central 4-panel door, one-double-hung sash window of 16
lights each side. First floor, 3 double-hung sash windows of 12 lights (on
without sashes, boarded over in July 1963). Dentilled course below eaves.
Central flat-roofed dormer, gambrel roof. Symmetrical elevation. Transverse
beams, boxed in. Original plain staircase from ground floor to attic; of pegged
construction. The floor of the W attics is approx. 30cm. higher than the floor
of the E attic, to provide greater headroom in one first-floor bedroom.
Originally there were 3 front dormers. Early in the C20 2 became defective and
were roofed over, and window apertures were made in the gables. With this
exception, and the substitution of a C19 front door, the house has remained
almost unaltered. There are other houses of the same type in the parish, built
by the Albyns estate, but the others are more altered.
