3/55 Old House


House, former hunting standing. Built 1542. Timber framed and plastered with
red plain tile roof. Timber frame exposed externally with weatherboarded
gables. 2 storeys. Varied C19 and C20 casements. Central door with semi-
circular head. Lean-to extensions at each end. Late C16 central red brick
concertina shaft chimney stack. Internally the frame has recurved wind bracing,
flat studs and cambered "deck" first floor. Service rooms at north end. South
end refloored with haunched tenons when coverted to residence late C16.
Commands wide prospects for viewing the hunt. Documents relating to emparkment
in 1542 also give costs for building this standing. (Some accounts of English
Deer Parks, E. P. Shirley, 1867). (RCHM 4).
