House. Late C16. Timber-framed, rendered with weatherboarded
first floor. Ground floor front wall rebuilt in painted brick.
Plain tile roof. Two frame bays with central lobby entry. Two
storeys. Remains of two-bay cross wing incorporated in single
storey range under lean-to roof to left. Central plank doors
within C20 open lean-to porch. 12-pane sashes to ground floor;
that to left is early C18 in oak with thick glazing bars
containing Crown glass; the other is later C18. To first floor
6-light sash windows.
Interior: large stepped brick stack with mantel beam to inglenook
which has been modified in C20 brick. The stack has been extended
on the upper floor to provide a three-centred fireplace to the
upper room above the hall. Cross and spine beams to ground floor,
chamfered with bar stops. Chamfered joists with lambs-tongue
stops to former hall; plain joists to service end to right.
Straight flight of stairs inserted against end wall in
subdivision of original hall. Single wall post visible to full
height in this angle. Frame largely exposed at first floor level.
Chamfered jowled posts with run-out stops. Arch braces to
slightly cambered tie beams. Face-edged scarf to front wall
plate. Clasped purlin roof with queen posts and windbraces. The
side wall of the former cross wing incorporated in the side range
has 2 full-height chamfered jowled posts. The front post has been
truncated above ground floor level and the end of the arch brace
has been sawn off. The central post is jowled to carry the floor
beam which has been removed. Two cambered collars have been built
into the later structure of the range.
