5/140 Woodham Mortimer Place



House now offices and workshops for European Electronics Systems. C18 front
range, C17 or earlier rear range with later alterations and additions. Gault
brick and stucco front range. Timber framed and plastered rear range. Grey
slate gambrel roof. Left and right external plastered gault brick chimney
stacks with 3 and 2 shafts respectively. Rear red brick chimney stack with
square attached shafts. Parapet with 3 pierced panels, moulded cornice. 2
storeys and attics. 3 segmental headed dormers, moulded surrounds, 2 light
casements. Window ranges, 6 to first floor, 5 to ground floor of small paned
vertically sliding sashes with moulded surrounds, friezes to ground floor.
Off-centre double doors of 6 panels, traceried light over. Fluted columns and
pilasters support the dentilled and moulded flat canopy. Single storey left
extension with roof hipped to left, moulded parapet cornice. One window range.
Set back to right, 2 storey and attic range, square attached red brick chimney
stack, 3 light weatherboarded dormer, central band, 2 window range of small
paned vertically sliding sashes. There is an oriel on shaped brackets to rear.
Of complex plan, at one time much larger, Hearth Tax returns record 30 hearths.
Interior features include stick staircase with wreathed handrail. 6 panelled
doors, moulded surrounds, some with corner patera and reveal panels. Panelled
window shutters, moulded dados and wainscots. C18 and C19 fire surrounds. Some
bridging joists visible in rear range and a large plastered chimney stack.
C18/C19 home of the Parker family.
