3/21 Conservatory approx.
30 metres north east
of Down Hall
Conservatory. c19. Timber and glass with cast iron brackets and supports,
gault plinth, gault left and right support walls. Polygonal with a hipped
rectangular lantern surmounting the hipped roof, ornate cast iron finials to
left and right. Central front and rear lower level semi-circular bays with
conical roofs, moulded pediments double front and single rear doors, curved
segmental heads, central glazing bars and lower panels to doors. Moulded top
plates to main frame. Windows with flattened segmental heads and central
glazing bars, cross transomed lights over excepting to tripartite windows with
glazing bars to semi-circular heads. Original pierced cast iron brackets to top
plates and purlins, original cast iron ventilating mechanism. Original cast iron
shelves with moulded edging supported by iron columns. Diagonal tiled floor with
pierced cast iron ventilating/heating grills. Central quatrefoil pool with
rounded raised edging. Metal plaque on door reads "Messenger & Co. Ltd
Horticultural Buildings, Loughborough". Some detailing obscured by overgrown
vegetation at time of re-survey. Documents relate to heavy expenditure on
garden features circa 1850 including the making of a pond, the conservatory was
probably erected at that time. The present Down Hall was built late C19/early
C20 and the older rear building was demolished sometime this century.
