Description

TL 90 SE ST. LAWRENCE MAIN ROAD

5/109 Barn complex including
attached horse wheel
house and threshing barn,
approx. 90 metres north
of Motts Farmhouse

II

Large barn with attached horse wheel house and threshing barn to north. Late
C18/early C19. Vari-colour brick. Grey slate roofs. The long, tall barn with
2 hipped midstreys and lean-to granaries to south face. Lean-to to north-west
face adjoining the full height horse wheel house, this with hipped roof,
pyramidal roof to attached full height threshing barn, there is a parapet verge
to main barn roof at junction with the eastern wall of the threshing barn and a
lower level roof continues to eastern wall of main barn. Threshing barn with a
window opening above the central doorway. Horse wheel house with 2 storey range
of slatted louvres, central doorway with loft over, all with segmental heads.
Door opening with timber lintel to outshot and full height doorway to north west
face of main barn, further west a sunken panel with dentilled eaves cornice and
central window. Some walls with rounded angles to prevent stock injuries.
Similar panel to west wall. Internally the complex has a good king post roof,
some of the main barn tie beams are scissor braced. A doorway in the partition
wall of the threshing barn leads into the internally octagonal horse gin, part
of the original driving shaft remains in this wall. Central first floor height
double beams with central tie, this with driving shaft groove. Until recent
years the original horse track was below these beams, but the floor is now of
concrete as the building is used for dairy farming. Originally a loft floor to
this room. The buildings were part of a larger complex, now demolished, and are
believed to have been based on the farm complex at Holkham Hall, Norfolk. A
very rare survival of a horse wheel house, barn complex in Essex.
