Hotel now unoccupied. Circa 1828-29. John Penrice of Colchester. Brick, rough
rendered panels, stucco panel edging, quoins and window surrounds. Grey slate
roof, hipped to Old Pier Street and 2 hipped northern ranges to The Parade.
3 red brick chimney stacks. Projecting eaves. Heavy brackets to cornice. 3
storeys. 3 window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes of decreasing
height from ground to second floor. Circular columns with moulded capitals and
square pilasters with moulded capitals support the heavy central flat headed
porch with fascia. Reveal panels, moulded surround, double doors panelled with
top lights. The Parade facade with second to fourth bays recessed similar
facing and 1:3:1:3 similar first and second floor window ranges but with cast
iron balconies to first floor. Ground floor windows boarded at time of resurvey
but appear to be mainly tall windows or French windows, second to fourth bay
leading onto a raised coloured tiled patio approached by steps with cast iron
railings. 3 sets of ornate cast iron steps and entry platforms with ornate cast
iron railings to the northern bays. Tripartite windows to outer bays.
