Major House and Shop


Row of 4 cottages and shop. Major House and shop of c1800; extended to left
c1830. Colourwashed. Flemish band brick; gabled roof with old plain tiles to
front and pantiles to rear; brick ridge stacks. Each cottage of 2-unit plan
with rear outshut. Segmental brick arch over C19 plank door to left, simple
pediment over late C19 four-panelled door, 4-panel door set in early 19 reeded
architrave, C20 door set in similar architrave, late C19 porch and door and
mid C19 shop front with dentilled cornice. Segmental brick arches over
12-pane sashes and late C19 four-pane sashes to left, and timber lintels over
first-floor 12-pane sashes to Major House and shop; dog-tooth eaves. Rear:
mid C19 range with hipped Welsh slate roof to centre; brew/wash house of c1800
to rear right, with gambrel pantile roof. Interior: Bell Cottage, to centre,
has C19 panelled and plank doors with strap hinges; plain and chamfered beams;
quarter turn stairs; cupboard with panelled door and simple fireplace with
bracketed mantleshelf to ground floor. Other cottages noted as having similar
interiors but not inspected.
