TL51NW GREAT HALLINGBURY CHURCH ROAD

C1848 a single storey village school built of red brick with black
diaper pattern of headers, in a restrained Jacobean style.
Symmetrical H-plan with additional central porch cross-wing of
greater projection. Stone slate roofs, replaced to rear and partly
to side by concrete slates. Gable ends to wings have saddle stones
with Portland stone kneelers. Moulded brick corbelled eaves. 3
buttresses with stone offset articulate the main block each side
of the porch. 3 four-centred arched doorways with chamfered edges
to reveals, one in central porch, blocked, has inscribed plaque
set over. Chamfered window openings with flat gauged brick arches.
Lozenge pattern glazing bars to casements (2 light in the main block,
3 lights in the crosswings) 3 tall cruciform plan chimney stacks on
ridges of crossovers and 2 boiler vents and a bellcote disposed
symmetrically on main ridge. A carefully detailed school design for
this period, well sited in relation to the church.
