3/22 Stagden Cross
20/2/67 Farmhouse


House, former farmhouse. C16 and later. Timber framed and plastered with C20
pargetting and peg tile roofs. Of 2 storeys and long rectangular plan form.
Composed of a gabled crosswing at the west end a 2 storey 'hall' block and a C20
extension on the east end with a hipped and gablet roof. A further gable on the
front in a probable C17 addition. Windows are C20 casements with small panes
and the C20 entrance door has a flat hood and brackets in C17 style. Stack on
centre line of roof ridge has 4 detached octagonal shafts. A similar stack of 2
shafts stands against the west flank of the crosswing. This was formerly a
jettied service wing and is of the C16. The hall is an early C17 structure with
reused timbers and jowled posts. The former east wall of this has an ovolo
mullioned window on the first floor. RCHM 7.
