House, comprising the remains of a Quadrangle. C16 part of the West Side of the
Quadrangle lies in Felsted: Red brick built with signs of blocked arches and
repair work. Red plain tiled roofs. Windows diamond leaded throughout. From
left to right of West face there is a single storey, stable block, the East face
of which has mullion windows and blocked doorways, next, a gabled crosswing of 2
storeys adjoined by a 2 storey gabled stair turret. The crosswing with a 3
light moulded brick mullion, a flat head window and nailed board door to west
face. 2 moulded brick 3 light mullions, 1 flat head window and door with arched
brick opening to east face. The main range, West face, with ground floor, 7
window range, first floor 3 window range, of various 1,2 or 3 lights, all with
round or arched heads. 2 nailed and boarded doors with oak surrounds and
lintels. At the far right is a taller building with an external circular red
brick chimney stack with chamfered square base, bands and moulded capping.
Crenellations, continued from south face form the parapet. 3 red brick chimney
stacks. The house was built by Richard, Lord Rich soon after 1536 when the
Priory of the Augustinian Canons, founded early C13 was dissolved. The house
was of 2 quadrangles and built partly on the foundations of the Priory.
Foundations of the monastic buildings lie to the East of this building and
material was re-used by Lord Rich from the original building. Much of Lord
Rich's house ws demolished in 1753. Many foundations are exposed in the
gardens. Of Lord Rich's house there remains part of the West and South sides
of the Outer Quadrangle, the latter including the Outer Gatehouse. Restorations
by Chancellor early C20. The south side of the Quadrangle including the Outer
Gatehouse lies in the Parish of Gt. & Lt. Leighs in Chelmsford District and are
listed Grade I, TL 71 NW 2/148. RCHM 2.
