FOULNESS
CHURCH END

Walled garden to south
of The George and
Dragon Public House and
adjacent to the
Churchyard

GV
II

Walled garden. C18. Vari-coloured local brick, the west wall adjacent to
Churchyard approx. 3 metres tall, the other walls approximately 1.3 metres tall.
Although now a walled garden, it is recorded that during the 1790's the then
Licensee of The George and Dragon Amelia Bennewith promoted bare fist fights
within the walls, thus the Churchyard wall was higher to keep the fights from
view of the Church. These fights continued until mid C19. Information from
R.W. Crump. Chairman AWRE (Foulness) Archaeological Society, October 1986.
