Courtyard wall and railings; 1896, By Sir Guy Dawber for William
Gordon-Canning. English-bond brick work, ashlar dressings, wrought
iron. Enclose rectangular courtyard in front of Hartpury House
(q.v.) on 3 sides. Gates to park opposite porch to house: short
fixed railings each side of double gates, decorative central
feature above main level. Square, panelled stone piers each side
with cornice and ball finial. Low brick wall, stone coping with
swept top carries railings either side, 5 bays to left, 6 to
right: railings supported by lyre-shaped stone uprights with
cornice, set across wall. Straight top and bottom rails to
railings, decorative feature in centre of each bay, framed vertical
bars. Tall, square brick pillars at front corners, stone bands,
cornice and ball finials, last with vermiculated band around
centre. On right 2 panels return to main entrance gate, piers as
corners, but with nib for gates, returned with stone console to
pier at top. Gates missing. High, plain brick wall links to
house. On left low brick wall forms end of courtyard, returning to
house: 2 openings, with low, square piers, plinth and flat stone
coping with moulded edge (date on House; D. Verey, Gloucestershire,
The Vale and Forest of Dean, 1970; notes at House).
