Farmhouse; C17 for Holder, altered and enlarged C18, early C19.
Plain render, lined as ashlar, slate roof. Irregular L-plan, long
rear wing, stair in projection in angle; 2 storeys. Entrance
front 3 gables with recessed centre: render on timber-framing left
and centre, brick to right; plain plinth. Two-light French door
up one stone step, transom over, flat head, in centre of each
gable: 3-bay single storey arcade to centre, up stone step, square
columns with simple capitals, responds at ends, flat lintel with
heavy moulded edge to porch roof. Behind 3-light mullion and
transom window on left, double door in centre, half glazed with
marginal lights above, flush panel below; rectangular fanlight
with curved glazing bars, all in panelled reveals with moulded
surround, rear wall blank to right. First floor 2-light casement
windows with flat heads in centre of each section, 3 gables over
with heavy verge moulding. Projecting chimney on left return with
short return roof to slope, further chimney right of centre on
ridge and on right return. Y-tracery to stair windows behind.
Interior: entrance hall, 6-panel doors, fluted architraves, lion-
head corner paterae, echinus moulding over. Large chimney-breast
on right, 3 elliptical arches to rear of hall, left to C19 stairs.
Acanthus-leaf cornice to room on left; fireplace surround with
lion-head corner paterae, scroll with trumpets in centre, cast-iron
fireplace within. Ceilings to front end rooms, first floor, coved
along sides, slight moulding surrounds flat centre. First floor
ceiling raised early C19, truss tie beams cut away and collars
bolted on above: square ridge: blocked window in centre gable.
Originally a timber-framed house of H or T-plan: left wing
originally extended at least one bay further back, centre either at
least one bay further to right, or brick right projection rebuild
of timber-framed wing of same plan. Well documented in Holder
papers. Forms group with late C17, early C18 brick farm buildings
(q.v.).
