Barn; 1695 (datestone); irregular mixed English Garden Wall and
Flemish bond brickwork; stone slate roof. Six-bay barn, 2
porches: later single bay extension on end. Main facade:
bullnosed top to plinth, clasping corner pilaster buttress at ends,
plain brick string course half-way up side walls. Left end 3 slit
air vents below, 2 above, stone ball gable finial: to right porch
with pilaster buttresses each side at front, double boarded doors,
elliptical brick arch over, 2 slit air vents in gable over, stone
plaque between, oval owl-hole above: stone ball gable finial.
Right return single slit air vent each level, string course raised
at back over elliptical-headed doorway, rebate for door. In
centre 6 slit air vents below, 5 above. Random rubble stone walls
project forward from porches either side of centre recess for lean-
to, added probably C19 for yard cattle, removed late C20. To
right second porch, as first, but doors rise to transom, with
vertical boarding above to arch: left door in 2 sections. Beyond
to right repeats left end. Lean-to against right gable, wide
doorway cut in front: clasping corner buttress: stone copings to
gables to extension. Left return 4 tiers of slit air vents,
diminishing from 5 to 2, oval owl hole above.
Interior, walls 450mm thick, air vents splayed internally with
cambered brick heads. Stone-paved threshing floors: low inserted
brick wall to right of right floor, timber top: boarded platform
beyond. Extreme left bay brick paved, up about 100mm from
threshing floor, with stone curb. Low, double doors to left
threshing floor at rear with elliptical brick arch, 2 slit air
vents above. Originally same on right, but brickwork over later
replaced with boarding on timber studs. Tie-beam trusses with
angle-struts, 2 pairs purlins, no ridge piece, wind braces to lower
purlins from wall plate. Latin inscriptions on plaques. An
important and little altered late C17 brick barn, forms group with
2 other brick farmbuildings and house; an unusual and important
survival (q.v.).
