5/70 The Old Nailshop
GV II
House. Late C16 or early C17, enlarged late C17. Brick-nogged
timber framing: a few wattle and daub panels at back, also signs
of stone plinth. Three-bay, 1½ storey, lobby entry to left, one
bay, 2-storey to right, slightly wider at rear. Main front to
road, earlier, larger part to left, lighter timbers, 3 panels high
to eaves: to right 4 panels high. Windows leaded lights. Two-
light window to right, boarded door with single-light each side on
right of lower part, door only covered late C20 porch, half-glazed
above brick, glazed door, boarded gable. Three-light casement to
left, and 2-light, latter replacing brace from corner post to sill.
Above brick-on-edge nogging on left. First floor 2-light casement
on right, 2 similar in swept dormers to lower part: brick chimney
on ridge behind front door. Right return 3-light casement ground
floor, late C20 two-light first, jowls to corner posts; 2-light
casement in gable, 2 collars to truss, curved V struts in apex.
Lower section end bays shorter than centre: one pair purlins,
straight brace in centre bay, square ridge. Lean-to conservatory
on left end not of special interest. Home of Wilfred Gibson, one
of Dymock poets, 1913-14: associated with L. Abercrombie, R. Frost
and Rupert Brooke.
