4/91 Great Netherton Farmhouse
Farmhouse. C17, early C18, early C19. Flemish and irregular
brick bonds, stone plinth, stone slate to garden side, tiled roof
to yard. 'U' plan, 4 windows wide across garden front, wings
project back one bay: 2[ storeys. Garden front: sash with flat,
rubbed brick arch on right,sash with flat brick arch to left,
against flush stone chimney, offset on left first floor. To left
half-glazed door, 2 bottom panels, under cambered brick arch,
painted dummy window right, single-light left, all under hipped,
tiled lean-to porch on trellis supports. Sash window to left.
First floor: 2 sashes to right, late C20 casement under cambered
brick arch over front door, sash to left. Windows in gables each
end, under cambered brick arches; dentil eaves between. Stone
chimney capped 2 separate plain brick flues, combined at top:
external chimney left; return. Right return 3-light mullion and
transom, under cambered brick arch left, 3-light late C20 casement
in similar opening right. Two 3-light casements first floor, iron
opening lights, leaded lights to right window, cambered brick
arches. Dentil eaves. External chimney right return, single-
storey lean-to in corner at front. Behind chimney large tank cut
from single stone, dated 1843.
Interior: timber-framed cross wall on left of right gable: right
front room dairy, slate shelves, cheese press and hanging racks.
Room behind wide fireplace with cambered, voussoired stone arch.
Scratch moulded door first floor. Roof. 3 bay centre, king-post
trusses, 2 pairs butt purlins, plank ridge: truss to left wing
collar and tie beam. Probably C17 'H' plan house with cross
passage on left, lateral stone chimney in centre to floored hall,
faced in brick in stages, centre widened to engulf chimney and
provide flush front to garden C18. Forms group with barn (q.v.).
