GV II

Former school and schoolmaster's house, now house. Probably
second quarter C19. Ashlar stone front, coursed squared rear,
tiled roof. Cross plan, each wing one room, porches at front
corners, 1½ storeys. To road: plain plinth: external chimney
left return, stone offsets: 2 diamond-set stacks above ridge. On
front of left wing single-light window, stone lintel: porch
doorway and gable left return, up one stone step, elliptical arch,
panelled door inside, parapet gable with stone finial: single-
light window in side, facing road. First floor single-light
window in gabled stone dormer, saddleback parapet (as all other
parapets): parapet gable on left end. Projecting wing, 2-light
casement on right and left returns, ground floor, iron opening
light, hoodmould with long ears. On front rectangular stone bay,
slight projection, sides unwindowed, 3-light mullion and transom in
front, hoodmould over with long ears, sloping offset above: first
floor front 2-light casement window in bay, hipped stone top back
to wall. Louvred slit above, flat head: parapet gable. Left
return, first floor, single-light casement, stone lintel, rising
into gabled stone dormer, parapet gable. Tall chimney base
behind, 2 diamond-set flues: small, flat roofed mid C20 dormer
behind. Right return projection, first floor, dormer only as
left. Right wing as left, mirrored, but doorway built up.
Interior: ground floor projecting wing large schoolroom
originally: 8-panel doors, panels in 2 rows, separated by moulded
strips. Property known as schoolhouse in 1842 when sold by
W.Hawkins. Forms group with Laburnam and Copeland's Cottages
(q.v.).
