Remains of house in Barn at Brierley Farm

GII
House.Medieval, possibly C14,altered probably late C16,now derelict.Timber frame with a small amount of brick infill, roof missing.Open hall house, cruck framed.Surviving central bay of a once three bay cruck framed hall, two surviving cruck trusses without collars or purlins but with ridge piece.Inserted ties, deeply chamfered, which carry spine beam and floor joists. Two beamed ceilings thus survive, one between the trusses and one outside them partly supported on later walling.Only one cruck blade reaches the ground, the other three have been under-built with brick. The trusses and ridge piece are heavily smoke blackened and significantly more so on the inner faces, thus indicating the original position of the fireplace. An interesting relic of a two phase medieval house of some quality. The whole is now encapsulated within a wooden timber and corrugated cladding barn which in itself is not of special interest.
