II
Barn. Mid C18. Wide weatherboarding on timber-framing, English
garden wall bond brick gable, tiled roof. Three-unit barn, porch
one side. Gable to road: stone plinth, brick above, 3 diamond-
shaped grouped air vents, stone copings to parapet gable. Left
return: brick wall for short section on right, high brick plinth:
boarding above. Projecting porch to left, double boarded doors in
gable wall, 3 holes in gable over. Lower plinth to left (ground
slopes up from road); pitching-hole: left gable timber-framed.
Interior, 5 bays, no intermediate rail to framing, long braces to
corner posts and posts by threshing floor. Timber tie either side
threshing floor at level of top of sill wall, open below except for
centre timber prop: long braces rise to tie beam of truss, angled
towards centre. Trusses with angle struts, 2 pairs purlins, plank
ridge. Long wind brace from wall plate cuts rafters. No evidence
of dovecote in porch. Loft inserted in one half C20: good example
of late type of timber-framed barn.
