Large country house. C17, enlarged in early C19 and remodelled in
early C20. Limestone ashlar with stone slate roof; ashlar chimney
shafts with moulded caps; one paired C17 chimney. C17 part: two
storeys with attic; fireplace backing onto cross-passsage (now
blocked); two C19 wings added. C17 west front gable has recessed
chamfered mullioned windows with hood mouldings, 3-light to ground
floor and 2-light to attic; the 2-light has original iron
casements; embedded in the wall are fragments of stone chevron
decoration from Brimpsfield Castle. North and south facing walls
of C17 house have 3-light windows to ground and upper floor, apart
from 4-light north facing ground floor window. Four-window south
wing with 16-pane sashes and keystone lintels; chamfered surround
to east facing doorway, and a timber porch. Stone mounting block
south of garden wall topped by iron railings; iron gate entry into
garden. At south end is hipped roofed C19 extension of one storey.
Early C19 east wing also has 16-pane sashes: one facing north in
much altered elevation of scattered fenestration. Alterations to
the north elevation in C20 include the elaborately moulded doorway
with deep shell hood, and a canted oriel window over; also gabled
3-light mullioned window, and a small upper floor room projecting
on stone corbels. At basement level: doorway with early C19 timber
panelled surround and C19 window with timber lintel. C20 gabled
eastern end has medieval chimney from Brimpsfield Castle used as
apex finial; 3-light mullioned windows to ground and upper floor;
2-light basement window. South of east wing are attached C19
stables with separate pitched roof; complete original fittings.
C17 house interior has an original beam in ground floor room with
jewelled chamfer stops (design matches the panelling now in
Brimpsfield Park, q.v.). In the garden: game house, (q.v.), and
C19 or early C20 dog kennels, (q.v.).
