3/7 Sandford House
II
Formerly several cottages, now one private house. From late C17,
with substantial additions and alterations in early C19 and
restoration in 1980s. Squared rubble stone with tooled stone
dressings, east wing faced in ashlar, Cotswold stone slate roof.
Large projecting stepped stone stack - an addition of early C18 -
on gable to west and twin ridge stack on gable to north west. East
wing roof level is higher and has 2 gable stacks and one C20 ridge
stack. West wing of 2 storeys, L shape with vestigial roof lines
of former cottages visible on west facing wall. South front has 3
windows, leaded 3/2/3-light stone mullions. Ground floor has
central doorcase, with C20 door and wide porch of 2 Doric columns
on bases supporting plain frieze and cornice, flanked by one 4-
light stone mullion and transom window. Windows all restored.
Porch probably early C18. East wing of 2 storeys and attic of 2
hipped dormers, single range. South front has 4 windows, 2 narrow
decorative glass sashes to left and 2 wider 4-pane sashes to right
- all of late C19. Originally had similar windows on ground floor
but 2 doorways have been inserted in 1983, both with large flat
stone hoods on brackets: One 4-pane sash to right on ground floor.
