7/131 The Priory


Large detached town house, now an old people's home. 1767 by
Matthew Sloper, with C19 additional wing to north. Coursed rubble
stone faced to east in ashlar, til roof, large ashlar stacks with
moulded cornices. L-shape C18 block with additional north wing
forming large rectangle. 3 storeys. Classical main front to east
with moulded stone cornice and dentils and balustraded parapet, and
pediment with circular window in tympanum over central 3 bays which
break forward slightly. Ground floor has 6 plate glass sashes in
plain reveals and central round-headed doorway with moulded
architrave and keystone and C20 glazed door. Lst floor has 7
windows, 12-pane sashes, the central 3 with stone architraves,
pulvinated friezes, cornices and pediments, and balustraded aprons.
2nd floor has 7 similar in plain reveals. Wide string courses
between floors. Some internal joinery remaining on ground floor -
shutters, panelling etc. Garden front to north of C19 has double
canted bays and single storey Jacobean linking unit, all with large
stone mullion and transom windows.
