4/111 Indian Fountain, canals and steps
in garden immediately south of
Fountain, steps and canals. Fountain and steps early Cl9 by
Thomas Daniell for Sir Charles Cockerell, canals C20. Limestone
and cast iron. Upstanding octagonal fountain base enclosing
circular pool with figure of a kneeling woman at centre. Long
narrow canals clOm in length and c2m wide to north and south.
Steps down bank to canal on south flanked by stepped wall.
Fountain: foliate cast iron uprights at each corner of octagon
flanking inset panels. Pointed dentils around upper edge.
Kneeling woman at centre of circular pool carrying a shell on her
head from which the fountain plays. Canals to either side with
hollow chamfered surrounds pair of stepped octagonal features at
base of steps (q.v. sundial). Fountain, canals and steps form
important features in relation to orangery (q.v.) and house (q.v.).
