SP 01 NW DOWDESWELL UPPER DOWDESWELL VILLAGE

Former barn now partly converted into house and garage/store (the
latter in ownership of Dowdeswell Place). C18 and C20. Coursed,
squared and dressed limestone, stone slate roof and some artificial
slate. Rectangular barn with projecting lean-to porch on east
side left of projecting gabled C20 extension. Single storey
extension to south gable end with single storey outbuilding with
shallow pitched roof extending away on west, similar extension
opposite forming courtyard in front of barn. C20 lean-to against
wall of barn. Scatter of C20 two and 3-light casement windows
with glazing bars and C20 plank door to west front. C20 sky-
lights on both sides of barn. One ventilation slit and traces of
another in west front. Further ventilation slits and 3 pigeon
holes with stone landing and small gable in east wall. Bull's-eye
window towards apex of south gable-end. Ventilation slit and
stilted-headed window with glazing bars in gable end facing road.
Two C20 plank garage doors right of gable end. Slightly stepped
gable-end coping with roll-cross saddle to gable-end facing road.
Gable end facing road and east side of barn form prominent features
in relation to the road and garden of The Manor House (q.v.),
respectively.
