5/2 Barn at Ampney Knowle

Large barn. Probably late C18. Coursed and squared rubble stone
with quoins, stone slate roof. Large opposed projecting gabled
wings towards north end, on west side with recessed door and 3-
light casement on ground floor, square pitch hole above, and small
rectangular opening in apex with projecting ledge below, all with
timber lintels. Slate-roofed lean-to in angle to right with double
garage. South end bay of barn has 11 stone steps up to recessed
plank loft door with cat hole and timber lintel and slit vent to
left. On east side projecting wing has very tall cart entry with
timber lintel and double timber doors, and projecting hipped canopy
on struts, square opening above. Lean-to and C20 shed to left.
South gable end has buttressed south-west corner and double bay
cart shed with 2 large timber lintels, square pitch hole above.
North gable end has blocked pitch hole and slit vent. Six bays,
collar and tie beams with 3 original tie beams, partition wall
towards south end between barn and cartshed/loft.
