5/10 Barn and stables at Birch Farm
(formerly listed as "Barn with Birt's
Farmhouse" on Road to Dudley Farm)
Barn with stable bay to right and projecting stable block in front.
Barn probably of early C18, stable block of C19. Rubble stone with
quoins, stone slate roof. Barn of 4 bays, collar and tie beam
trusses, with former projecting gabled cart entry to west blocked
in with lean-to outside. Large lean-to to left of gabled entry
with 2-light stone mullion with square hoodmould on north wall.
Opposed flush entry on east side with double timber doors and
timber lintel. Stable bay to right with stable door and 7 stone
steps up to recessed plank loft door with cat hole. Large slit
vent in gable of right hand end and 2-light stone mullion with
square hoodmould on ground floor. Stable block projects forward on
east side to left of barn entrance with 3 loose boxes with stable
doors and office at east end, with roof continued as sheltered
walkway in front supported on 4 stone pillars. Gable to east is
coped with kneelers and has 2-light stone mullion with square
