of the Holy Rood

Churchyard cross. Late C14/early C15. Two large square steps on
slanted plinth. Base of cross is a square rising to tall octagon
with slanted top, with tapering shaft carved with leaf decoration
at base rising to reset head in form of gabled tabernacle with four
faces. Each face has figure(s) set in traceried niche: to west,
Virgin and Child; south, St. Laurence; east, the Crucifixion;
north, Robert Fitz-Harmon. The head was discovered in 1860 hidden
in the old stair to the rood tower and replaced in its original
position. Restored late C20. AM (Glos) 417.
