10/29 The Manor House
(previously listed as The
7.3.80 Manor House Hotel)
- II
Manor house, 1656, mason Valentine Strong to a design (apparently) of the Lord of
the Manor Richard Whitmore: altered and enlarged 1864 and 1891 in a style rather
of the C17 so as to appear largely modern. The original house was of the
Commonwealth type, four square with hipped roof. Coursed stone with tiled roof.
Two storeys and attic on plinth, five windows with three gabled dormers, this has
been refronted and refenestrated, with the central entrance removed. Large two
bay wing to east added in 1891, a late Victorian interpretation of the original
rather than a copy, two and five light stone mullioned windows and two flat
topped dormers. The original shape of the house is better seen from the garden
(north) front. The house retains important interior fittings which are the
reason for listing. These include the hall fireplace dated 1658. The dining
room fireplace of a Baroque character which may be reset, also a fine allegorical
plaster ceiling.
