Former rectory reputed to be on site of monastery. C14-C15, C17,
C19 and C20. Coursed squared and dressed limestone, partly
rendered, stone slate roof, ashlar stacks. Rectangular main
body plan with mid C19 extension at rear. C20 single bay extension
left of main body. Main body 2½ storeys with twin-gabled, 4-
windowed garden front, C14-C15 undercroft at right end. Four-
light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casements with king mullions
to ground floor. Double-chamfered hollow-moulded casements to
first floor, similar windows but with continuous hoods to gables.
Stopped hoods over ground and first floor windows. Two double-
chamfered single light casements lighting undercroft. All windows
lighting C17 facade with horizontal glazing bars. C20 two-storey
single bay extension at left end with canted bay, 2-light casement
to first floor. C17 open-sided porch off-centre right supported by
free-standing and engaged columns. Semi-circular arch with
keystone and pierced spandrels at front of porch, decorative stone
gable with moulded capping above. Four-centred archways either
side. C20 plank door with moulded almost semi-circular headed
surround with moulded imposts and keystone. C20 three-light
casements lighting left-hand return of C20 extension. Stepped
coping to gable ends. Twin diagonal stacks with moulded cappings
at right gable end. Roll-cross saddle at left gable end.
Interior; C14-C15 vaulted undercroft shows maximum use of ribbing
branching out from freestanding cylindrical columns and responds
with roll-moulded capitals and bases. Capitals of responds and
piers indicate an earlier date suggesting possible rebuilding of
vaulting. Plain recessed circular bosses at centre of each vault.
Large moulded Tudor-arched fireplace with carved spandrels and
overmantel with stepped mouldings in room above undercroft. Large
open fireplace with flat-chamfered segmental-headed surround
(formerly with bread oven) in far left-hand room on ground floor.
Flat-chamfered Tudor-arched door surround in former left-hand
return of main body now opening into C20 extension. Undercroft
reputed to have once extended out under present front lawn and to
have been infilled early C20.
